Is Human-Centric Design the Secret to Unlocking the Value of Artificial Intelligence?

Funny and tragic, both stories reveal a timeless fear: what happens when technology doesn’t understand people—and when people don’t know what to do with the technology?

Today’s artificial intelligence systems are exponentially more powerful than anything imagined in those films. They can analyze vast datasets, write code, flag financial fraud, and predict customer behavior. And yet, across industries, a surprisingly simple problem continues to undermine adoption: people don’t know how to use AI in the flow of their daily work.

Executives invest in algorithms, engineers tune models, consultants run pilots—but when it’s time for line-level employees or managers to incorporate AI into their routine decisions, they hesitate.   • Contextual delivery: Embedding AI in the tools users already rely on—like dashboards, chats, or scheduling software.

  • Behavioral cues: Using design to guide users on how to interpret and what to do with AI outputs.

This approach makes AI tangible and usable—shifting it from a backend engine to a front-end partner.

Real-World Example: From Confusion to Confidence
Imagine a commercial loan officer at a regional bank. The company has invested in an AI model that scores credit risk based on dozens of data points, market trends, and historical performance. But to the loan officer, the system is just another dashboard with unfamiliar terminology and unexplained scores.

Without human-centric design, she may ignore it entirely.

Now imagine that same model integrated into her loan approval workflow. Instead of a new screen or system, it appears as a side panel in the application she already uses. Adoption Isn’t Resistance—It’s Ambiguity
Many AI rollouts operate under the assumption that employees resist change. But the real barrier is more nuanced: people don’t adopt what they don’t understand—and more importantly, they don’t embrace tools they haven’t seen work for someone like them. The root cause of non-adoption is often ambiguity: ambiguity about the AI’s purpose, its trustworthiness, and its relevance to the user’s daily responsibilities.

Human-Centric Design addresses this by eliminating friction at every touchpoint—integrating AI into the systems users already use, designing clear feedback loops, and ensuring the outputs are actionable and timely. But another equally powerful lever of adoption is exposure. People need to see what good looks like.

That means putting AI into the hands of users early, especially those inclined to experiment—your natural first movers, champions, or problem-solvers. These individuals don’t just test the tool—they find ways to make it useful. They adapt it, stretch it, and apply it to real work. And then they do something even more important: they tell others what worked.

This peer-led adoption pattern is critical to scaling AI across the organization:

  • Get the tool into real hands quickly—not just in labs or IT environments.

  • Let early adopters test it against live problems in sales, operations, finance, or support.

  • Capture and document how they use it—including what surprised or helped them.

  • Bring those success stories and edge cases back to the broader user base.

  • Refine design based on grassroots insights, not just executive input.

This “design in the wild” approach ensures the tool evolves in context, shaped by users who find value in it—not just theorists or vendors. In a sense, you're letting the first wave co-create the value proposition on behalf of the rest.

Much like any successful product launch, adoption isn’t just about rollout—it’s about momentum. Human-Centric Design creates the conditions for that momentum to build organically by ensuring the system feels intuitive, embedded, and relevant from the moment a user first interacts with it.

Because when someone on your team says, “This actually saved me 30 minutes today,” that will do more for adoption than any training session or executive mandate ever could.

Long-Term Use Requires Ongoing Human Feedback
Even when adoption starts strong, sustaining it over time requires adaptation. Business needs shift. User expectations evolve. AI models degrade. Human-Centric Design encourages organizations to build in feedback loops, observe real usage, and iterate continuously.

Just as Edgar in Electric Dreams learned (too late) that love isn’t enough without understanding, AI needs more than good intentions. It needs ongoing alignment.

Best practices include:

  • Monitor usage patterns to see where AI is being underused or misinterpreted

  • Collect user input regularly—not just at launch

  • Audit outputs to ensure relevance and fairness
